Dave author and founder of About Compost

I have long been interested in sustainability and ways to create lifestyle choices that help our planet while being practical.  With a background in and a love for science, I love experimenting with different ways to improve how we care for our planet.

Living a middle-class, suburban lifestyle with three kids, time is always at a premium.  Time to learn, time to experiment, and, frankly, time to try lifestyle choices that aren’t practical or scalable.  I respect people who live completely sustainably, but it’s just not in the cards for our family for cost, time, and feasibility reasons (probably an excuse, I know, but it’s the truth and easier to accept it and look for things we will do than to pretend to do things.)

During the pandemic, I found myself with more time and less interaction.  My wife and I decided to start a garden that we had long discussed (okay, she decided, and I helped.)  This led to looking at composting as a way to reduce our waste and grow something other than moss which seems to be the only thing our yard can successfully grow.

We’ve now been composting for a couple of years, and after our experimentation and research, I’m hopeful I can inspire others to try it.  We’ve successfully converted several of our neighbors.  Composting is easy, practical, and can be a lot of fun.

I hope you enjoy our journey here.  My goal is to bring you practical advice and information on how to get started in composting while also keeping up on ways to do it better or to do more.  I’d love to successfully convert you to home composting, but even doing it through a local provider is a way to improve your sustainability footprint.

Enjoy, and thank you for taking the time!
