What You'll Learn

Composting is a great way of disposing of organic material to avoid having to add it to a landfill.  It eventually decomposes into a nutrient-rich supplement for your soil that you can add to your garden, lawn, or flower bed.  Even though almost anything organic is technically compostable, usually for composting at home, there are things that it’s not a good idea to compost.  How about tofu, that amazing food?  Can you compost tofu?  Let’s explore that.

What is Tofu?

Tofu is made out of soybean curd, but it’s a bit more than that.  To make tofu, they coagulate soy milk and press the curds into blocks.  These blocks can have different levels of softness, from silky to the super firm.  It’s basically made like cheese except using bean curd and soy milk.

While tofu has been around for thousands of years in China, it’s been in western countries for a little over fifty years.  It is often added as a filler with other foods because it easily absorbs flavors.

Tofu is a multibillion-dollar industry.  It is a staple for vegetarian lifestyles and is used in a variety of other foods as well.

Can You Compost Tofu?

You can compost tofu. It’s actually an excellent addition to your compost.

Tofu has a lot of protein.  This protein is rich in nitrogen which makes tofu a green material

How to Compost Tofu

For the fastest results, like most material you add to your compost, you want to break up or cut up your tofu.  The smaller you make it, the faster it will compost.  Otherwise, it may take considerably more time to decompose.

The other thing to consider with tofu is that it may attract pests.  Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian rodents (and other pests) alike are likely to be attracted to tofu if you just drop it on top of your pile.  So, mixing the tofu into your compost pile is a good idea to keep them from smelling it.

This will also help the tofu compost more quickly.  When you mix up the browns and greens in the right ratios, your compost pile will naturally work better and faster.

Can I Add Tofu to Compost?

You sure can.  It’s a pretty easy product to add.  You want to break it up into smaller pieces and bury it inside your compost to keep pests away. Otherwise, it should be no problem at all.
